The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 mg/L for public drinking water systems. While private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA standards are based on existing health information and can therefore be used to gauge the relative quality of water from private wells. Since nitrates are known to slowly increase, we recommend you monitor the water quality. Please see the attached "Nitrate Fact Sheet" for important information regarding nitrate This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject Certificate of On -Site Systems Approval. From Northern Testing Laboratories, Inc. Nitrate is a negatively charged compound of nitrogen and oxygen, which is very soluble in water. Nitrate is not readily filtered or otherwise removed in the soil and can pass rapidly into ground water wells. SOURCE: Nitrate is a major component of fertilizer and wastewater. Often the nitrate is in the form of ammonia or protein first, which through contact with oxygen and certain bacteria, converts to the oxidized form known as nitrate. Sources of nitrate from wastewater include urea, ammonia cleaners, food solids, and bacterial cells. It may also result from the breakdown of organic matter buried in the soil. TOXICITY: Nitrate is generally not toxic to adults or children over the age of two or three years, but is associated with a potentially fatal infant disease called methemoglobinemia. In the digestive system of young children, nitrate converts to nitrite, which can pass through the intestinal wall into the blood stream. There it combines with the hemoglobin and interferes with the ability of the blood to carry oxygen. For this reason, methemoglobinemia is referred to as "blue baby" disease. The EPA limits the concentration of nitrate in public drinking water supplies to 10 mg/L. The standard has been lowered from a previous level of 45 mg/L set by the US Public Health Service and the World Health Organization. TREATMENT: due to its solubility in water and negative ionic charge, filtration and other common home water treatment systems such as softening or iron filtration does not readily remove nitrate. The best method for limiting nitrate in well water is source control. This can include avoiding overdosing of fertilizer near the well and maintaining good separation distances between septic tank leach fields and the well. A special anion exchange filter that contains a media with a strong affinity for negatively charged -- ions in water, or by a reverse osmosis treatment system or distillation can remove nitrate. TESTING: Nitrate analysis is usually done by one of the several "wet chemical" methods using a spectrophotometer to read the final color endpoint. Specific ion electrodes also can be used to detect the activity of nitrate in water. This laboratory uses several different wet chemical methods approved under the public water supply laboratory certification program. They also have test kits available, which the laboratory uses to perform an inexpensive "screening test", and with which the homeowner can monitor the change in nitrate levels from their well. They recommend comparing the test kit results against a certified analysis from the lab occasionally to verify the accuracy of the kit. We recommend using a specially prepared bottle that has been rinsed in hydrochloric acid for collecting samples. # aanleMge) I o 4 ✓" Pl # b'S00 aagwnN ldlaooj I jegwnN ldlaoaI — luawAed 10 alea oVqe 1+ 1 h luaulAed Jo a1ea $ aa. JanleAADvl $ aaA `dS00 auogd Aea auogd Aea 3WVS rSA lua6e alelse lead{ sseippe 6uIIleW (s)jaumo A:pado.id luaiin0 NV HONV `3AV VN1d1V 00£L (sse.ippe ales) uolleool 11 NOSNINAAVH uolldljosep lebal alaldwo0 NOI1bWUO:INIIVNBN3J I ,c P :alep uollealdxS IanoaddV s;wajsAS 91!S -up jo ajeopiaO t,0 -5£Z-510 'a'I I90Jed L66L-EK-L06 :xeJ u011096 aalemOlseM -R aaleM aIIS-up tI06L-CVC-L06 :auogd luawlledaQ saolruaS luawdolanaQ 30V OHONV =10 All-lVdIOINnw •jaaui6ua aga Aq palsenbai asuuuagao ssalun 'jeaui6ue aga oa pasealai aq oa VSOo :aleQ :Aq panlaoad :aoue;sia :jol Isanbei JanieM ❑ aama oI n S Iqd ❑ wa sA ja a of n S lM Iqd ❑ Ap.unwwo0 ❑ IIaM Allunwwo0 ❑ Xuel 6ulploH ❑ 06elols JoleM 0 olldaS alenljd F IIaM aleAIJd :TdSOdSla 2I31t/M31SVM =10 3d U :Alddns UBIVM JO 3dA1 'ti :SW0021aas ziO m3awnN '£ (xaldna ao/pue Allwed 9I6uIS) s5ullla^^d oldlllnW ❑ xaldna ❑ (nciv oM/M) AllweA aI6uIS ❑x :JNIII3M4 :10 3dA1 'Z auogd Aea auogd Aea 3WVS rSA lua6e alelse lead{ sseippe 6uIIleW (s)jaumo A:pado.id luaiin0 NV HONV `3AV VN1d1V 00£L (sse.ippe ales) uolleool 11 NOSNINAAVH uolldljosep lebal alaldwo0 NOI1bWUO:INIIVNBN3J I ,c P :alep uollealdxS IanoaddV s;wajsAS 91!S -up jo ajeopiaO t,0 -5£Z-510 'a'I I90Jed L66L-EK-L06 :xeJ u011096 aalemOlseM -R aaleM aIIS-up tI06L-CVC-L06 :auogd luawlledaQ saolruaS luawdolanaQ 30V OHONV =10 All-lVdIOINnw jaags aniq IsiN3840 VS00 aaglo uoslnpy MOIA IleM tioslnpy oluasad luoslnpy welslS oljdeS ;(aoslnpy aje.tjlNX }slNoaNO `dS00 :S1N3WHO)d1LV 'L ')ijonn saaulsue jeuoissajad eqj ui suoissiwo jo sjo.ua joj egsuodsaj jou si abejogouy jo Ajpdiolunn aql 'ejsejy jo ajejS ayj w p8JajS]O8I.I88ui6ua Jinia jeuoissajad juapuadepw ue /q g gdei6eied ui u9ni6 suoijejueseidej eqj uodn Aluo paseq (VSOC)) lenaddy swajsAg alis -up jo sajeoggiao sanssi (dSd) uoisinid sooimoS juawdoIanap a6eJo14ouy jo Apledioiunw ayj_ :a)ea 91e0111la0 leul6up , :A8 de00uoljelndljs 6ulnnollol ay) q}Inn 'swoojpeq aSS33p °^ d9ti6 3:) swoojpeq .•NOSMIOve 'N :--VHpjw / swoapeq •. • *.ease'*.. ....`...... c(/. it A• ° r9 z V SOI Ienoidde leuoljlpuoo panaddesla — SOI panojddy Z# wajsAS 17 X03 panoiddy 6# walsAS 3anIVNJIS USO OZ -SZ-£ ale(] 3'd `NMO(IMd N 3NIW aweN pajuud s,Jaaw6u3 NV HONV 3AV VNOI:]iVN Mt, ssaippy t,988-LZL auogd '3'd `NMOCINV N 3NIN jwl=l 30 aweN -pajjlwgns uogejwoIul aqj /(Tuan o) ajls agj jlsln !ew .4ejs ajlS-up 1241 96p91nnou0e I -uogepejsul )o awg aqj je joa}}a ui suoijeln6aj pue 'saoueupo 'sopoo ajejS pue ledlolunlN algeolldde lle gjlnn eouelldwoo ul (ale) sl wajshs lesodsip jajemajsem jo/pue Alddns jejuni ajls-uo eqj 'uoljoadsul pue uolje6ljsanw Aw wojj pue sail) 96ejogouy )o fgiledlolunVy aqj woj) paulejgo uoi)ewjo)ul eqj uo paseq )eq) /(}I an legpn} l •wajaq pajeolpul ainjonijs jo ad4 pue swooapeq )o jagwnu aqj jo) ajenbape pue leuoljounj 'ejes (a.ie) sl wajsAs lesodslp jajemajsem jo/pue Alddns jajem alis-uo eqj jegj smogs 'uoljeogdde slgj jo) soullapm0 Ienojddy swajsAS ajjS-up )o ajeoilpoo aqj ui paulljno sampeowd uo paseq 'uolje6ljs8nul AW jegj A)lJan l 'moleq unnogs ajep uoljepllen 941 10 se pue ojejaq paxl}}e leas Aw Aq pagpeo sy M33NION3 AS N01103dSNI :10 1N3W31`d1S COSA Checklist Legal Description: HAWKINSON LT 1 If more than 1 septic system on lot: COSA Checklist # of A.
