Wastewater disposal system upgrades construction
Design Narrative
The existing system is nearly 25 years old. The homeowner has had performance issues with the current
absorption field and wishes to provide an additional area. Due to site improvements (concrete driveway
and vegetated areas) the alternative areas for an absorption field are limited. We propose to provide a
diverter valve, and new service line and provide a new absorption field.
IMPACTS TO ADJACENT PROPERTIES
Lot 7 is on a cul-de-sac. The topography of the area does not flow towards adjacent properties. The
system is designed to be at least 10'from the adjacent lot 8 property. See site plan for details.

The proposed absorption field is more than 100'from any surrounding wells. See the site plan for
details.
WASTEWATER SYSTEMS
Some of the existing wastewater system will be utilized. The new absorption trench will be located a
minimum of 16' (2x depth of existing system gravel). There is a wastewater system located on the
adjacent lot 8 but is more than 125' away.
RESERVE SPACE
The new system will allow the old system to regain its original functionally and the homeowner will be
able to rotate between the two systems.
SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE
Soil logs show the subsurface free of groundwater 20'deep. There are no established surface drainages.
The surrounding areas are forested and relatively flat.
DESIGN AND CALCULATIONS
The existing septic system was designed to serve a 6 bedroom residence. It has a 2000 gallon tank and
an existing absorption field that exceeds the 900 square feet of absorption area required.
The original septic submittal included a soil log that identified the under laying material as SWP and
SP/SM. As such we'll assume a conservative figure of 150 SF/bedroom. (See Attachment 1 for original
submittal).
6 bedrooms x 150 sf/bedroom = 900 SF of needed absorption.
Trench: Depth — 8 ft, Width 2 ft, Length — 57 ft.
8 ft x 2 ft = 16 SF of area per Linear foot of trench. 900/16 = 56.25. Say 57 Feet of Length.
SOILS AND PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS
Three test holes were originally bored and logged. The results were consistent across all three bores as
well as the well drillers log for the water well located on the same lot. The soils from 0-0.5' are classified
as organics, 0.5'-1.5'SM, 1.5'-3.0'SP/SM. From 3'-7' SW Clean sand, 7'-9' SP/SM, 9'-17' SW/SM. The
original percolation rate was calculated to be 4 min/in or 1.2 GPD/SF (See Attachment 1 for original
submittal).

Technical Specifications
General
1. Scope. The scope of this project is to install a service line at the end of the existing wastewater
absorption field and connect it to the new absorption field as shown on the plans.
2. Construction. Work shall conform to the approved drawings. The Engineer shall approve all
changes to the drawings. All construction shall conform to applicable Federal, State and Local
codes and regulations. The contractor is responsible for utility locates and any other permits
required to complete the work as shown on the plans.
Wastewater System
1. All components must meet or exceed standards set by the Municipality of Anchorage,
specifically, the Component Parts and Materials specifications, published February 2011 by
the MOA, CDD, Onsite Water & Wastewater Program.

Wastewater disposal system construction
Design Narrative
The proposed wastewater disposal system is designed to serve a 6 bedroom residence. While a 1750
gallon septic tank would be sufficiently large to comply with code, the proposed design calls for
installation of a 2000 gallon septic tank.
As shown on the soils logs for test holes #1 and #2, the soil in the proposed construction area is
predominantly sand. The perc test was conducted at a depth of 4.5 feet in the siltier portion of the sand
profile where the pere rate was measured to be 4 minutes per inch. The measured perk rate corresponds to
a soil rate of 1.2 gpd/sq. ft, and is applicable to the entire test hole #2 below 2.5 feet, as well as being
applicable to the material in both the top and the bottom of test hole #1. The perc rate is the same as that
specified for filter sand. The cleaner sand between 5.5 and 11.25 feet in test hole #1 will pere at a
somewhat faster rate, but is underlain by the slightly siltier material. The design of the trench is
conservatively based on a soil rate of 1.0 gpd/sq. ft. A six bedroom residence can be expected to
generated 6 x 150 = 900 gallons of wastewater per day, which requires 900 square feet of absorption area.
The proposed 57 foot long trench with 8 feet of sewer gravel beneath the distribution pipe will provide 912
square feet of absorption area.
As can be seen from the site plan, there is ample room on the lot for a replacement system. We have
designated a parallel replacement trench north of the proposed trench, but one could just as easily be
constructed between the proposed septic tank location and the test holes.
Due to the large size of the lots in this subdivision, the proposed developments on Lot 7 will have no
significant impact on the feasibility of constructing future wells or replacement septic systems on adjoining
lots. There will be no impacts on reserved space / surface or subsurface or on drainage.

Specifications
1.0 General:
1. 1 The scope of the project includes installation of a 2000 gallon septic tank followed by a 57 foot
long soil absorption trench containing 8.5 feet of sewer gravel.
1.2 Construction shall be as depicted on the approved site plan and design drawings. Minor
deviations from these drawings may be allowed or required by the engineer conducting the inspections.
All construction procedures and material specifications shall conform with Municipal and State
requirements.
1.3 All separation distances shall be in conformance with Municipal requirements, unless specifically
waived.
1.4 The contractor shall be responsible to obtain any necessary utility locates, and to work around any
buried utilities.
2.0 Septic Tank:
2.1 The septic tank shall be Municipally approved with a minimum of two compartments, and shall be
set level on undisturbed soil. Each compartment shall be equipped with a watertight manhole cover and a
4" cleanout. If the tank is buried less than 4 feet, it shall be insulated with 2 inches of approved burial
type, rigid insulation.
2.2 All pipe connections to the tank shall be equipped with waterproof mechanical couplings. The
waste line from the residence to the septic tank shall have a minimum slope of 1/4... per foot, and the waste
line between the tank and the soil absorption system shall have a minimum slope of 1/8" per foot. A
cleanout shall be installed within 5 feet of the building foundation, and a double cleanout shall be installed
within 5 feet downstream of the septic tank.
3.0 Soil absorption system:
3.1 The soil absorption system shall be constructed by excavating a 57 foot long trench to a total
depth of 12 feet below ground level in the vicinity of test hole #1. The alignment of the trench shall follow
the natural surface contour of the ground.
3.2 The bottom of the trench excavation shall be level. Any compacted or smeared surfaces shall be
raked to allow proper infiltration.
3.3 A total of 8.5 feet of sewer gravel shall be placed in the trench, with the 4" diameter perforated
distribution pipe laid level with the bottom 8 feet above the bottom of the sewer gravel. Sewer gravel shall
be 0.5" - 2.5" screened gravel, with less than 3% passing the #200 sieve.
3.4 Monitor tubes and cleanout pipes shall be of 4" diameter and installed in the locations shown on
the design drawings. The portion of the monitor tube extending through the sewer gravel shall be
perforated.
3.5 Approved filter fabric shall be placed over the entire top surface of the sewer gravel before
backfill.
3.'6 The top surface of the soil cover material shall be raised a minimum of 6 inches higher than the
surrounding terrain to allow for subsequent settlement, and shall be graded to smooth contours. Fill
slopes shall be no steeper than 3: 1.
4.0 Inspections:
4.1 A total of 4 engineering inspections will be required during the course of the project: (1) initial
stakeout with the contractor to establish the location of the system and to discuss the plans, specifications
and construction procedures, (2) after the trench has been excavated to expose the infiltrative surface to
ensure that the trench bottom is level and at the right elevation, and that the soil on the sidewalls conforms
with the soil test information, (3) after the sewer gravel is in place and the distribution pipes have been laid
and connected up to the septic tank, but prior to placement of filter fabric, and (4) after final backfill and
grading is complete. The septic tank requires one inspection after it is set level and the piping connected,
but prior to backfill. This inspection may be incorporated with any of the above inspections.
4.2 The installer shall coordinate the timing of the inspections with the engineer sufficiently far in
advance to ensure the availability of the engineer.
