SITE LOCATI~ AND DESCRIPTION: The approximately 18 acr~ parcel of land to be subdivided is located three-fottrths of a mi] e east Of the Glenn Hi,way near Peter's Creek in Chugiak. The property is overgrown with sm~]l birch in the areas pr~-viously cleared for homesteading. Imrge~r Birch' near the west side of the property appear to be very old. There are scattered spruce o~ the west side. ~he topography is varied du~ to glacial depesits. The center of the plat is generaly flat, sloping steeply to the west at t. he south west end and sloping up to a platteau on t/~e south east side. The existence of a r~liable water source in t~his c~ological area has ~n proven sufficiently to sanitation offic/als in t~he imitate past. Previous chemical and bacteriological testing of existing water sources has indicated that drinking water c~,~!ity se~ndards are satisfied. A~! of t~he subsurface disposal fields in t~e ~.l~s ~'ate vicinity ha~ functioned satisfactorily in the kind of soil typical to proposed subdiv/sion. F/F/.D EXPLORATION: On April 29, 1976 , one 17 foot hole was exuavated with a ~rott, 3/4 Cu. ~d. Ba~d~oe and another hole was started. The equipment broke du~ to the fro ~zen soil and further attenpts to excavate wer~ postponed. Five 'major Pleistocine glacial advan~_s along the consequent or subsequent lacu- stoc~ns and alluvial deposits greatly, influenced the present topography of the ar~a. The surficial geologic unit of ~he site appears to be part of the Peter's Creek Fan as it wof<ed through the late Pleistocene lateral moraine deposits. The till of tb~n deposit is con't¥onlv sandy and stonev with oo~bles and boulders co, mun. P~bbl~ and sand predominance but silt and r~ck dust are present to provide a kinder for som~ soils. C~¼hles and pebbles are rounded rather than angular. St~qURFACE OC~3DITIO?~S: %~ne ground cover over the site g~ner~]y consists of from 6 inch~s to a foot of or~c~nic silt filled with roots. Coarse sands and 9rav~]s ~So~£a~ to ~pths of from 6 f~.. to 10 ft.~ generally. %his layer is in-e_ ~spag~d witch cobbles a~d son~ boulders. In~I~h~-~-= extremm south east corner (lots 3 & 4) there is a layer of boulders at a demt_h of 5 to 6 ft. ~hat would not ~11c~; the dr~]] to penetrate, even after 5 serrate attempts. A percolation ~=st vzas at~ .~pted at t~hese t~o lots and the holes c~uld not be kept full of w~r, dura to ~he excellent dr~na~e. Below 10ft. the soil is generally compact and ~nse with slightly higher sil~ contents. No W£ound water was found in any of the ~holes except TH #17. The water that entered this hole appeared to corns f~ r~lting snow just bel~ t~he surface. The lower parts of this hole did not have evi~an~ of water. Perculation-t~sts v~re run on those, test holes that appeared to have the poorest soil contions. The results of the percolation tests s~h~qed that even the worst holes would s ._uppo~ rt underground seepage pits satisfactorily. The soils were r~ted according th the Unified Soils Classification System, and were ~a~loer~d by the results of the percolation t~sts, the ma~hanical analysis, the e~pe._rience of the g~ologi~'st and his observations. Wheme dual soils classifi- cations are sh~n, it is du~ to the instruction listed in th~ Unified Soils ~ssi~on Instructions, but in all cases a soils ~ating is given, based on the analysis conducted and ~hould be the design figure used by future property owners for figuring s~bsurface disposalareas. ~he size of the lots reflects the condition of ~he soils and the ability to absorb waste water effl,~=nts. O~NCLUSION: R~na soils underlying this proposed subdivision will suuport s~o- surface disposal mystems which are properly designed and sized. There is sufficient room on e~ch lot for alternative ~posal areas, should the initial system fail. %~ne soils are suiemhle with respect to foundation bearing capacity for residmntial structures. The soils are generally F-l, F-2 rated for frost susceptability, which is sa~ =factory. Soils tests were run'in the right-of-vray for the proposed roads and roads will be ~signed and cons ,true, ed to reset the cu~z~nt re~ H r~nts for road construction for th~ soils ~-ncoun~ered. There ar~ no adverse grades on the ro~B~, but the built]lng lots along Stephen Circle will probably be located fairly close to the road because of the stccper slopes to the beck of the lots. Previous chemical and bacteriolo~crical ~esting of exise{ng water sources has indicated that drinking water quality standards are satisfied. All of t~he subsurface disposal fields in the J~',~tiate vicinity have functioned satisfactorily in the kind of soil typical to this proposed subdivision. FIELD EXPLORATION: On APril 29, 1976 , one 17 foot hole was excavated with a ~utt, 3/4 Cu. ~d. BacP~oe and another hole was started. The equi~=nt broke d~e to the fro ~zen soil and further attempts to excavate were postponed. On May 20th, a high.fay auger was tried but was not equi.~ped with a bit that would go through the rocks and cobbles. On May 22nd thru May 24th, 1976, 21 holes were drilled using a soils auger mounted on a Nodwell. Delali Drilling Co. did mi ] of the soil boring with this auger. A graduate Geologist was on hand during the entire drilling operation, taking samples and recording soils data. The testholes were located as close to possible disposal site areas as was possible, no~Jng property boundaries and topographical features. SUBSURFACE C~.~DITIONS: ~ne ground cover over the site qaner~lly consists of from 6 inches to a foot of organic silt filled with roots. Coarse sands and gravels tmderlay the suz£ace to ~epths of from 6 ft. to 10 ft. generally. This layer is interspaced witch cobbles and som~ boulders. In the extreme south east corner (lots 3 & 4) there is a layer of boulders at a depth of 5 to 6 ft. that would not allow the drill to penetrate, e~an after 5 seperate attempts. A percolation test was attempted at t~hese t~o lots and the holes could not be kept full of water, due to the e~cellent dra/na~e. Below 10ft. the soil is generally compact and ~nse with slightly higher sil~ con~nts. No ~£uund water was found in any of the holes except ~ #17. The water that entered this hole appeared to come f~-~ melting snow just bel~ t~he surface. The lower parts of this hole did not have evidence of water. Peroolation tests were run on those test holes that appeared to have the ~oorest soil contions. The results of t. he percolation tests showed that even the worst holes would support underground seepage pits satisfactorily. The soils were rated accord/ng th the Unified Soils Classification System, and were ~red by the results of the percolation tests, the mechanical analysis, the experience of the geologist and his observations. Where d,~l soils classifi- cations are shown, it is du~ td t-he instruction listed in the Unified Soils Classifi~tion Instructions, but in all cases a soils rating is given, based on the analysis conducted and s~hould be the design figure used by future property owners for figuring subsurface disposalareas. Pebbles and sand predominate but silt and rock dust are present to provide a binder for ~ so~ls. Cobbles and pebbles ar~ rounded rather than angular. SUBSURFACE G~3DITI~S: ?ne ground cover over the site g~neral]y consists of from 6 inches to a foot of organic silt filled with r~ots. Coarse sands and grails underlay the surface to depths of from 6 ft. to 10 ft. generally. This layer is interspaced witch cobbles and som~ boulders. In the e~ south east corner (lots 3 & 4) there is a layer of boulder~ at a deDt_h of 5 to 6 ft. What would not allc~ the drill to penetrate, even after 5 se~erate attempts. A percolation test ~ attempt, ed at t~hese t~o lots and the hole~ could not be kept full of water, due to the excellent dra~naqe. Belcw 10ft. the soil is generally compact and ~nse with slightly higher sil~ contents, No ground water was found in any of the holes except TH #17. %~e water that entered this hole appeared to come from melting snow just belc~¢ t~he surface. The lower parts of this hole did not have eviW~nce of water. Pe~-colation tests were run on those test holes that ~ppeared to have the poorest soil contions. The results of t_he percolation tests s.hcwed that even the worst holes would suppo, rt undei-uzound seepage pits satisfactorily. The soils were rated accord/rig th the Unified Soils Classificat/on System, and wer~ tmmpered by the results of the percolation tests,'the mechanical analysis, the experience of the geologist and his observations. ~_r~ dual soils classifi- cations · -.re shown, it is due td t_he instruction listed in the Unified Soils Classifi~tion Instructions, but in all cases a soils rating is given, based on the analysis conducted and s~hould be ~he design figure ussd by future property owners for figuring subsurface disposalareas. The size of the lots reflects the condition of t~he soils and the ability to absorb waste water effluents. (I~CLUSION: The soils underlying this proposed subdivision will support sub- sL!rface disposal s~/stem3 which are properly designed and sized. There is sufficient room on each lot for alternative disposal areas, should the initial system fail. The soils are suitable with respect to foundation bearing capacity for residential structures. The soils ar~ generally F-l, F-2 rated for frost susceptability, which is satisfactory. Soils tests were run in the right-or-way for the proposed roads and roads will be designed and constructed to r~et the-current re~ts for road construction for the soils encountered. SITE I~D(i~I@; A~3 DESCRIPTION: The approximately 18 acre parcel of land to be subdivided is loCa~ted three-fourths of a mile east of the Glenn Highway near Peter's Creek in Ghuqi~k. The property, is overq~-uwn with small birch in the areas previously cleared for h~mesteadin~. Larger Birch near the west side of the property appear to be very old. Ther~ are scattered spruce on the west side. The topography is varied due to glacial deposits. ~h.e ~-nter of the plat is generaly flat, sloping steeply to the west at the south west end and sloping %p to a platteau on tJ]e south east side. The north end sloFes up 9ently over a h~ !1 and then slooes do~ tc~.~ard the Gler~n Highway. There are no adverse grades on the roads, but t~e buil~n~ lots alon~ Stephen Circle ~ill probably be located fairly close to the r~d kecause 0f the steeper slopes to the back of the lots. All of t~he subsurface disposal fields in t~e ~ate vicinity have functioned satisfactorily in th~ kind of soil typical to this proposed subdivision. FIELD EX~LOPATION: On April 29, 1976 , one 17 foot hole was excavated with a Drott, 3/4 Cu. ~d. Bac~gaoe and another hole was starta~. %he ~equipmmnt broke due to the frozan soil and further attempts to excavata were~ postmoned. On ~y 20th, a hig~.;ay auger w~s tried but was not ~equim~ed wi~h a bit t_hat would go through the rocks and cobbles. On ~'.~y 22nd t=hru i]~y 24th, 1976, 21 holes were drilled using a soils auger ~munted on a Nodwell. Delali Drilling Co. did a]] of the soil boring with this auger. A graduate C~olc~st was on hand during ~e entire drilling operation, taking samples and recording soils data. %ha test~holes were located as close to possible disuosal site areas as was possible, noting property boundaries and topographical features.
