September 26, 1985 Jim Dowling Dowling & Associates 804 East 15th Avenue Anchoragef Alaska 99501 SOIL REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED AMUNDSEN SUBDIVISION Dear Mr. Dowling: Enclosed are the results of soil testing performed by Alaska Environmental Control Services, Inc. (AECS), on W 1/2, NE 1/4, SE 1/4, Section 23, T12N R3W Seward Meridian. BACKGROUNB: This area lies in the foothills of the Chugach Mountains, West of Hillside Drive and North of Alatna'Avenue. General slope and drainage is to the north-west. Elevations range from 814 to 924. Vegetation is primarily black and white spruce and'alder, more well drained locations, generally in the east, have occasional white birch. Much of Tract A has visible surface water from recent heavy rains. In general, areas with less slope are more poorly drained. The soils encountered grade from thin seams of SANDY GRAVEL (GP) TO SANDY SILT (ML). DISCUSSION: Tests were performed in conjunction with the requirements set forth in' "Design Manual for On-site Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems" (1980) published by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The testholes were dug by an INSLEY tracked backhoe on September 19, 1985. The objective of our testing was to determine the soil suitability for on-site septic systems. The important soil characteristics are 1) soil depth (depth to bedrock);.2) depth to groundwater; and 3) soil percolation rate. Refer to the Appendix for individual testhole soil logs. SHALLOW SOIL: The results of our testing indicate that bedrock depths will not be a- limitation in design.and installation of on-site systems. No bedrock was encountered in our testholes. SOIL WATER: Water was encountered in testhole #1 at 13 feet. This depth should not be a problem in installation of conventional septic systems. However, both testholes were chosen in locally well drained areas. Much of TRACT A had surface water ponding from recent heavy rains. SOIL PERCOLATION RATE: Both testholes encountered soils with good percolation rates (less than 150 square feet/bedroom.) CONCLUSIONS: Based on our testing we conclude that the soils identified in the two testholes are suitable for on-site septic absorption systems. Caution should be exercised in the design of building sites, access roads, and well locations in order not to eliminate the suitable soil described. Much of the site is visibly much more poorly drained. More testholes are suggested before further subdivision of Tract A. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 561-5040.
