Gentlemen:
Attached is a copy of the site plan showing the location of the existing well, creek,
and septic tank/seepage pit system for the proposed Elephant House at the Alaska
Zoo, and a log of the existing well.
The Elephant solid waste materials will be shoveled up and hauled away from the site
for disposal. The proposed septic system will serve only floor drains in the Elephant
House, and will only have to handle the waste washed into the drains when the building
is hosed down. We have assumed about 250 gallons of water will be used for hosing
down the building, which will normally be done two or three times a week.
We have sized the septic tank at 1000 gallons to allow for the accumulation of non-
decomposing matter. The seepage pit will be 5'-0" in diameter x 6'-0" deep with a
miminum of two feet of course gravel backfill all around, this results in 170 square
feet of effective absorption area. Assuming 2.5 gallons/sq.ft./day absorption rate
the seepage pit will handle 485 gallons/day.
Please note the distances between the septic system and the creek (about 100 feet) and
the well (about 150 feet).
If you have any further questions please contact us.
Very truly yours,

Re: Test Hole and Soil Log Report for Sanitary System
Lot 22 Section 15 T12N, R3W, S.M.
Gentlemen:
We are submitting herewith the test boring results and our comments
regarding soil conditions encountered at the subject site. This
investigation was performed in accordance with your request of July 29,
1974, and those porcedures outlined in a letter date September 13, 1971
by Mr. Rolf Strickland of the Greater Anchorage Area Borough Department
of Environmental Quality.
A single test hole was put down within the Lot 22 area for the purpose
of defining general subsurface soil conditions for the proposed sanitary
system. Excavation was accomplished with a tractor-mounted backhoe and
the test hole was extended to a total depth of 15.0 feet below ground
surface. The final log prepared for the test hole has been included in
Drawing A-01.
Ground water was not encountered in the test hole.
We appreciate being given this opportunity to be of service to you.
Should you have any questions with regard to the above, please do not
hesitate to contact us.
Very truly yours,

SUBJECT: Anchorage Children's Zoo
g'~alley Road
!ly District Sanitarian~ Susan Dtckerson, conducted an inspection of the subject
facility on February 20, 1974.
The following items were noted:
l)
A single dumnster is orovided for 9arbag~ and is ~ntied ~v contract
with a commercial disposal company. The attendant~ )~r. ~ale Tuttle,
reported that he hurled hones, ~craos and ht~es ~rnm th~ ~me brought
tn the zoo. tie was instructed t~ pr~nerlv dispose o~ these wastes at
toe sanitary land fill.
The doit;al cages are cleaned daily and tho wastes are loaded into a
dl4m~ truck. The greatest ~nount o,· waste consist~ o¢ strm.,~ Crol!,l tl~e
el~nhant house. The straw contains water from the e!enhant's dait,/
~aths. The truck is driven to th, e land ¢ill ~ n,¢ess~ry. 'ir. Tuttle
was asked to cover the lo.~d durinm transnortation so no nuisance is
created.
3)
There appears to be no possibility of stream contamination from animal
wastes. The northernmost pe~ is about 75 yards from the stream. This
woulJ be a critical consideration for ~ny fret.me expansion e¢ zoo
facilities.
4)
There was noted the existence of an old cesspool serving as a recep-
tacl~ for runoff from the floor of the eleph)nt barn. Also, a second
cesspool was installed without a permit to serve the two front barns
and a food concession stand. According to the installer, Dyess and
Ziegler, a pit was dug and lined with rings and gravel. It is not
known whether the semi-public well is the proper distances from all
systems. I feel that this department must rem4ire an unorade of the
second systenl.
s)
The food concession has been operating f~r some time without a permit
from this department, rY. Tuttle agreed to call for a preliminar~
inspection prior to reopening in Hay.
The zoo appearance, in general, is excellent~ it seems to be well cared for by
Mr. Tuttle.
