Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519--6650 Ref: Septic System As-builts for Lot 2, Morino S/D_ To whom it may concern: Attached is the as -built drawings for the subject septic upgrade_ Comments regarding the system are as follows - 1. SOILS BELOW TRENCH, As can be seen from reviewing the attached inspection report, the soils in the test hole area, at, a depth of 11.5 to 12 feet, "perked" at approximately 120 minutes/inch- Once the trench excavation was done, it could be seen that the very tight soils (soils which smeared during excavation) along the bottom were isolated to several small pockets (one of which was near the test hole), and did not appear to be extensive. The length of the trench was extended by 6 feet to compensate for the areas with very poor soils. In short, most of the soils (side walls and bottom) appeared to be equal to, or better than, the soils encountered in the test hole, with virtually no smearing. My confidence in this system to operate adequately is enhanced based upon the suitability of the old trench, and the septic system on the adjacent property (Lot 1 Morino S/D). The old trench is located very close to the new trench, and is at a depth of 12+ 'Feet. It has only 370 ft2 of absorption area and has operated adequately for 15 years_ The new trench is at an average depth of around 10.5 feet, and has an absorption area of 1116 ft2_ In short, we have installed 3 times as much system, and at a shallower depth. The septic system on the adjacent lot is virtually identical to the trench we installed. It is in similar type soils (slow perking GM, 324 ft2/bedroom), at a similar elevation on the hill, has 8 foot of drain rock, and a total depth of 12 feet_ Soils testing on the adjacent lot (7/28/89) indicated there are no groundwater concerns even during the summer months_ This system has been in operation since August of 1989 with no apparent problems, per the property owner on Lot 1, Morino. Telephone: (907) 337-6179 . Fax: (907) 338-3246 e 8471 Brookridge Drive 9 Anchorage, Alaska 99504 2. INSTALLATION OF ALTERNATOR VALVE: An alternator valve was installed so that flow can be diverted to either the old or new trenches_ The ability to alternate will provide an additional factor of safety in the design. I am unaware of any negative impacts that this installation would impose on adjacent wells, or septic systems_ If you have any question, please call me a 337--6179, Sincerely, Jef /`X/0 Garness P -E_, M.S. Sox 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-6650 Ref. Septic System Upgrade for Lot 2, Morino S/D. To whom it may concern= Attached is the application, site plan, and design drawings for the subject upgrade. Comments regarding the proposed system are as follows: 1. TRENCH DESIGN= As can be seen from reviewing the attached percolation test, the soil "perked" at 60 minutes/inch at the location selected for the new trench. This corresponds to an application rate of _45 gpd/ft2_ Since the existing home has 3 bedrooms, the total design flow is 450 gpd. Based upon this, the minimum amount of absorption area is 1.000 ft2. The proposed trench is 8 fleet deep and 63 feet long, providing an effective absorption area of 1008 ft2_ 2. SEPTIC TANK PUMPING, The existing septic tank is inside the 100 foot well radius, consequently, it will be abandoned/replaced. The access for pumping the existing/new tank/trench is very limited and the elevation difference is such that the maximum suction lift is being approached (per pumper used for adequacy test). Consequently, it is essential that the new tank be placed at an elevation similar to the old one. It may not be possible to pump the new trench completely through its monitoring tube. The trench could be pumped with a submersible well pump if necessary. S. INSTALLATION OF ALTERNATOR VALVE= An alternator valve will be installed so that flow can be diverted to either the old or new trenches. The old trench will be pumped so as to hasten its recovery_ 4. TOPOGRAPHY: There is a small bench, and a slight drop off (35% slope) near- the south end of the neva trench. I am proposing to place some of the excavated soil in this area, and regrade it to 250 or less. I am unaware of any negative impacts that this installation would impose on adjacent wells, or septic systems_ If you have any question, please call me a 337-6179. Sincerely, Jefij+//A. Anchorage, Alaska Dear Mr. Morino: At your request of July 25, 1977, we conducted a subsurface soils investigation at the proposed location of the sanitary sewer system on the subject lot. The investigation complied with those procedures required by the Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Environmental Protection. This investigation, which was accomplished on July 26, 1977, consisted of a test hole drilled to a depth of 20 feet below the existing ground surface. The test hole was sited according to your instructions and its location is shown in attached Drawing A-01. Drilling was accomplished with a rotary drill rig using continuous -flight solid -stem auger with an outside diameter of 6 inches. A sample was taken at the depth shown on the soils log in Drawing A-01. The sample will be held in storage at our lab for approximately six months. In addition, all material brought to the surface by the augers was continuously monitored by an experienced ' engineering geologist. The topography at the site is generally gently -sloping to the west. At the time of the investigation the site had been stripped. The top of the test hole was located at original ground surface. The soils encountered in the bore hole are shown in the test hole log in Drawing A-01. The symbols used in Drawing A-01 are explained in Drawings B-01 and B-02. This log displays specific conditions encountered at the test location. However, subsurface conditions may vary in other parts of the lot without any apparent surficial evidence of the change. Groundwater was not encountered. Bedrock was not encountered. At the time the hole was drilled seasonal frost was not present. Permafrost was not encountered,. Based on the visual classification of the soil and the requirements set forth by the Municipality of Anchorage, a percolation test was not necessary within the test hole on the subject lot, fV,) k@ y BI r ANCHORAGE FAIRBANKS JUNEAU VALDEZ WASILLA n July 26, 1977 Fred Morino: Page 2 We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you. Normally, the grain size distribution determines classification of the soil. The soil is defined according to major and minor constituents with the minor elements serving as modifiers of the major elements. For cohesive soils, the clay becomes the principal noun with the other major soil constituents used as modifier; i.e, silty clay, when the clay particles are such that the clay dominates soil properties. Minor soil constituents may be added to the classification breakdown in accordance with the particle size proportion listed below; i.e, sandy silt w/some gravel, trace clay. no call - 0 - 3% trace - 3 - 12% some - 13 - 30% SOIL CONSISTENCY - CRITERIA: Soil consistency as defined below and determined by normal field and laboratory methods applies only to non -frozen material. For these materials, the influence of such factors as soil structure, i.e." fissure systems, shrinkage cracks, slickensides, etc„ must be taken into consideration in making any correlation with the consistency values listed below. In permafrost zones, the consistency and strength of frozen soils may vary significantly and unexplainably with ice content, thermal regime and soil type, Cohesionless Cohesive N*(blows/ft) Relative Density T- (tsf) Loose 0 - 10 0 to 40% Very Soft 0 - 0.25 Medium Dense 10 - 30 40 to 70% Soft 0.25 - 0.5 Dense 30 - 60 70 to 90% Stiff 0.5 - 1.0 Very Dense - 60 90 to 100% Firm 1.0 - 2.0 *Standard Penetration "N": Blows per foot of Very Firm 2.0 - 4.0 a 140 -pound hammer falling 30 inches on a Hard - 4.0 2 -inch OD split -spoon except where noted, DRILLING SYMBOLS WO: Wash Out WD: While Drilling WL: Water Level BCR: Before Casing Removal WCI: Wet Cave In ACR: After Casing Removal DCI: Dry Cave In AB: After Boring WS: While Sampling TD: Total Depth Note: Water levels indicated on the boring logs are the levels measured in the boring at the times indicated. The results are summarized as follows: WELL ADEQUACY TEST= The static water level in the well was 78.5 fleet below t1he top of the casing. The test was performed by pumping water at an average rate of 0.6 gpm for a total of 1070 minutes (642 gallons). In the first 500 minutes, 318 gallons was pumped, and the level dropped to 117 fleet (38.5' drawdown). In the final 570 minutes, 325 gallons was pumped and the water level remained constant (117')_ In short, the well was recovering as fast as water was being pumped (0.57 gpm) _ Based upon this information it is clear that the well is capable of producing 450 gpd (.313 gpm), as required for a 3 bedroom house. There is no log on file at the municipality for this well. According to the homeowner it is 500 feet deep, and drilled by Rampart. If so, there is a capacity of approximately 600 gallons, below the static water level in the well casing, to meet surge demands_ It should be noted that there is very poor water pressure in the house. The .6 gpm flow rate was the maximum I could get from the hose spigot in the full open position. I am unsure whether this is a problem with the pump size, or the pressure switch which operates the pump. Regardless, the well capacity is adequate_ WATER QUALITY: Water samples were pulled and analyzed for nitrates and bacteria_ The nitrate level was =10 mg/l (10 mg/l allowable); and there was zero bacteria detected- The nFSiC6C water quality meets the M.O.A. criteria Tor a Health I3 Authority Approval. Copies of the water analysis are 1t attached. Telephone: (907) 337-6179 • Fax: (907) 338-3246 . 8471 Brookridge Drive . Anchorage, Alaska 99504 SEPTIC SYSTEM EVALUATION: According to the as -built records the existing trench has 64 inches of drainrock below the sewer pipe_ During the site visit it was noted that 63 inches of water was in the sump at the end of the trench, submerging the invert of the sewer pipe= This is referred to as a surcharged condition, and is technically failed per the municipality. The sump had several feet of thick black solids in it, rather than clear liquid, indicating that the septic tank had overflowed solids into the trench sometime in the past. In summary, the septic system is failed and probably at the end of its useful life. It may be possible to "jet" the trench and have it treated with hydrogen peroxide, in an attempt to rejuvenate it, but there is no guarantee it will work. Because of its age it is my recommendation that the system be completely upgraded with a new tank and drainfield. Unfortunately, if you select me to do the engineering work, my current schedule dictates that I could not start on it for about 2 weeks. If you have any questions, please contact me at 337-6179_ Thank you for your business_ Sincerely, J of Kelley2.wps M. S.
