Robert Bell and Associates June 20, 2012 RE: New Septic System Design Mt Baldy Estates, Lot 4 Municipality of Anchorage Development Services Department Onsite Water & Wastewater Division PO Box 196650 Anchorage, Alaska 99519 Attn: Jeff Poet or Debbie Wockenfuss A proposed 4 -bedroom house is planned to be constructed on the 7.87 acre parcel described as Lot 4 of Mt. Baldy Estates Subdivision. The property is located in Eagle River off Golden Eagle Drive. This is the first lot being developed in the subdivision. There is one developed lot with a single- family home >300' to the southeast. This property slopes to the west-northwest at between 8 and 23%. The slope in the area of the proposed onsite wastewater system and its replacement is approximately <10%. Domestic Waste Water Calculations & Septic Design: We are using a soil log -percolation test for sizing our absorption area. The test hole was in the vicinity of the proposed infiltration trench and shows 8 -inches of topsoil followed by loam, gravel, and sand, then followed by gravel with sand and cobbles down to a depth of 6 feet where an impervious layer was encountered. No groundwater was noted. The percolation test found soils 2.5 feet below the surface to have a percolation rate of 2 minutes per inch. We reviewed historic data for on-site systems on adjacent properties and found a 2005 test hole and percolation test performed by Allan Murfittfor the same site. These records show similar soil conditions. A second percolation test shall be completed prior to the construction of the septic system to confirm the size of the absorption area is adequate. Field changes may be required dependent on the results of the second percolation test. With the logged soil characteristics, moderate slopes, and the limited space found on this property we recommend using a standard bed absorption system. Our design maintains 2 feet of ground cover over the entire septic system with 2 inches of rigid insulation. Length = 750 s.f.: (12 ft) = 63 ft Construction of New Septic System: A new 1,250 gallon septic tank will be installed and connected to a 4 -inch service line from the building. The septic tank will be connected to a raised bed absorption system at its central manifold. The field will extend to the south-southwest of the manifold parallel to the contour of the slope. The absorption area will consist of perforated distribution lines placed on top of 6 inches feet of filtering rock (3/4" to 1-1/2" washed rock). Monitoring pipes will be installed at all four corners of the field, and cleanouts will be installed on the ends of each distribution line. The bed will be filled with additional washed rock to ensure 2 inches of cover is maintained above the lines. Permeable geotextile fabric will then be installed over the washed rock to prevent fines in the backfill material from infiltrating and damaging the absorption system. 2 inches of rigid insulation will be placed over the system and then at least 2 feet of native soils shall be placed over the entire system to obtain the minimum effective ground cover. Backfill over absorption trench shall not be compacted. Cleanouts shall be installed on the service lines going in and out of the septic tank. All pipes going in and out of the septic tank shall be installed on undisturbed native soils, or in trenches that have been adequately compacted. Maintenance of Septic System: Routine maintenance shall be performed on the system, including pumping of the septic tank at least every two years. Using garbage disposals and flushing of non -degradable items (coffee grounds, cigarette butts, tampons, paper towels, etc.) should be avoided. The owner should limit heavy surface loads in the area of the septic system to maintain the structural integrity of the system. Trees and other large plants should be removed and maintained at an adequate distance to prevent roots from growing into the system. Please contact me with any questions.
