RE: CLOSURE OF ABANDONED WELL AT 232 TAYLOR STREET, ANCHORAGE
ALASKA
Dear Sirs:
BGES, Inc. (BGES) and Alaska Demolition have recently completed an underground storage tank
removal project for the Cook Inlet Housing Authority at the above -referenced location. The tank was
located at Lot I N2, Block 6, Mountain View Subdivision, 232 Taylor Street, Anchorage Alaska. During
the demolition portion of the project, an abandoned well was uncovered at the work site. The well was
approximately 24 feet deep, 3 feet in diameter and was encased in concrete. Additionally, the well was
apparently dry as no water could be seen at the bottom. At the request of Alaska Demolition, BGES
contacted the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) and the Alaska Department of Environmental
Conservation (ADEC) for well closure guidance. Jamie Stazel from the ADEC provided direction
requiring that the well be backfilled with clean materials; the upper 10 feet of the well must be filled with
an impermeable material such as concrete; and that the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (ADNR)
must be notified of closure activities. A subsequent inquiry to the ADNR indicated that we should notify
your agency.
On Monday, May 8, 2006, Alaska Demolition removed the cement casing from the upper ten feet of the
well and then the well was backfilled with approximately six cubic yards of concrete providing an
impermeable layer as required by the ADEC.
