Septic System Upgrade
To Whom It May Concern:
Attached please find the application and supporting documentation to upgrade the
septic system for the referenced 2 bedroom house. The existing septic system was
installed in 1983 and the drainfield will not pass an adequacy test. It is proposed to
retain the drainfield for future use and install a new 1000 gallon steel septic tank.
The proposed design is based upon a test hole dug on July 6, 2005. The hole was dug
to 19.25 ft with no water encountered. After a 7 day monitoring period, no water was
detected. The proposed drainfield will be installed in a silty sand layer between 7.7511
and 13.25 ft. A percolation test conducted between 7.5 ft and 8.0 ft resulted in a rate of
5.0 minutes per inch. An application rate of 0.8 gpd/f is used in the design. The soil
log is attached.

Due to limited space available on the lot, the septic system will be placed 100 ft from the
Class C well located on Lot 9, Sand Lake #2 Block 1 and 130 ft from the Class C well
on Lot 12, Sand Lake #2 Block 1. The waiver has been granted by the Alaska
Department of Environmental Conservation. A copy is attached.
A lot line waiver is requested for a distance of 2 ft from the north and south property
lines. Due to the configuration of the adjacent properties' septic systems, I do not
believe that this will have any adverse effect on their water and wastewater treatment
needs.

Dear Ms. Ellis:
On July 20, 2005 this office received your submittal requesting a separation distance waiver frc m a
proposed single family septic system to the two Class C public water systems mentioned above. The
septic system will be installed on Lot 9, Sand lake #2, Block 1. Due to the small lot sizes in this area,
there is insufficient room to meet the 150 -foot separation distance requirement between the procased
septic system and these two Class C wells.
Sand lake #2 Lot 7.8.9 & 10
This well is located on Lot 9 and serves lots 7, 8, 9 & 10 according to our files. It was approved for
operation by this department as a Class C public water system on 10/10/83. A waiver of 100 feat to
the proposed septic system also located on Lot 9 is requested. This well has a depth of 520 feel below
ground surface (bgs). Two layers of clay are noted on the well log, one from 252 to 390 feet bF s and
the second from 413 to 470 feet bgs. Recent nitrate and coliform samples detected neither oftte
contaminants. The well seal is in good condition and the surface water flows away from the wt 11.
From the Site Plan included in the submittal, it appears there are four septic systems (including the
one on Lot 9) located within the 150 -foot separation distance radius but beyond a 100 -foot radius.
Based on this information, the requested waiver to 100 feet Is approved for the proposed septic
system as long as its construction and sizing meet minimum Municipality of Anchorage
standards.
Sand Lake #2 Lot 12, Block 1
This well is located on Lot 12 and serves Lots 11, 12 and 15 on Block 1 and Lots 13 and 14 on Block
2 according to our files. It was approved for operation by this department as a class C well on
6/19/84. A waiver of 130 feet to the proposed septic system is requested. The depth of this we I is
unknown. Recent nitrate and coliform samples detected neither of the contaminants. The well seal is
in good condition. From the Site Plan included in the submittal, it appears there is one other septic

system within the 150 -foot radius but beyond a 100 -foot radius. Based on this information, the
requested waiver to 130 feet is approved for the proposed septic system as long as its
construction and sizing meets minimum Municipality of Anchorage standards.
The approval of these waivers is based in part on a newly constructed septic system that meets -:he
minimum requirements of the Municipality of Anchorage. The waivers are therefore only appraved
to the proposed septic system on Lot 9 and do not apply to any other septic systems located wit tin the

A water sample taken prior to the water treatment system revealed an arsenic
concentration of 20.7 micrograms per liter (ug/L). Additional water samples taken
after the water treatment system revealed an arsenic concentration of non‐detect.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a maximum
contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 ug/L for public drinking water systems. While
private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA standards are based on existing
health information and can therefore be used to gauge the relative quality of water
from private wells. Information on arsenic is available from the On‐Site Water and
Wastewater Program website (www.muni.org/onsite) or at 343‐7904.
This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject Certificate of On‐Site

A Certificate of On -Site Systems Approval inspection and test of potable
water was recently conducted on the well water supply on Block 1, Lot 9 of
Sand Lake 42' Subdivision. This inspection revealed an arsenic
concentration of 20.4 micrograms per liter (ug/L) for the property's well
water sample. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established
a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10.0 ug/L for public drinking water
systems. While private wells are not subject to this regulation, EPA
standards are based on existing health information and can therefore be used
to gauge the relative quality of water from private wells. Information on
arsenic is available from the On -Site Water and Wastewater Program
website (www.muni.or onsite) or at 343-7904.
This advisory must be attached to all copies of the subject Certificate of On -
Site Systems Approval.

The Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issues Health Authority Approval
cerificated based only upon the representations given in paragraph 5 above by an independent professional engineer
registered in the State of Alaska. The DHHS does this as a courtesy to purchasers of homes and their lending
institutions in orderto satisfy certain federal and state requirements. Employees of DHHS do not conduct inspections
or analyze data before a certificate is issued. The Municipality of Anchorage is not responsible for errors or omissions
in the professional engineer's work.
